“Shame that State Attorney withholds information about the disappeared, utter equipment lack for searches”: Gonzalo Moreno

“Our patience has reached its limit,” said Gonzalo Moreno, father of a young man who disappeared at Bar Shots. He stated that families need a meeting with Governor Marina del Pilar and with the State Attorney General, with whom they have only met once. The nearly 28 discoveries of remains that have been made were mostly carried out with their own resources, and sometimes searches were delayed because official vehicles did not have fuel.

Search groups continue to look for their relatives, victims of forced disappearance, a problem that has worsened across the country. One particularly tragic case is that of Kevin Moreno, who disappeared after going to a nightclub to have fun — and was never seen again. His parents began their own search years ago and feel that the government has not supported them in their effort to at least learn what happened to their loved ones.

Gonzalo Moreno, Kevin’s father, has tirelessly fought to find his son and learn his fate. He has joined other families of the disappeared and even found support from organizations abroad, yet feels that within his own state he has not received enough help — especially from the Baja California government.

He described how what was once known as the “club zone” — where several bars were supposed to offer a safe environment for young people to have a good time — became instead a “Bermuda Triangle”, where many young people vanished. In response to what they view as government inaction, families have organized into search collectives in Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa, and other states — a movement largely ignored by the leader of the political movement that ruled Mexico from 2018 to 2024.
