Jorge Heras, reporter and columnist for several media outlets, was assaulted by two individuals, just as was arriving to his daily morning program CIUDAD CAPITAL, Tuesday August 26th at about 8:00 o’clock, he got a few blows but manage to run and the attackers boarded a car and fled.
Between Wednesday and Saturday there were four arrests made, first they got the getaway driver, who turned out to be a Mexicali PD cop, and he had been working as a bodyguard for a Mexicali entrepreneur whose name wasn´t revealed
A few minutes later the case was all over the Internet and the local news, State Attorney General aria Elena Andrade held a press conference, which Heras attended among many other reporters, there she said there had been a follow up through the C4 Command Control cameras and they were working on the video footage of the runaway vehicle, son soon they would be giving relevant information.
Hours later his brother was detained also, by Thursday evening the State Attorney General (FGE) informed that one of the subjects who actually assaulted Mr. Heras had been arrested and then by Friday they assured that the “intellectual Author” was in custody of the FGE.
The aftermath of this attack is sad, the Media Outlet which hosted Mr. Heras program and several others, has closed down due to the risk that implies to produce serious journalism, as Heras and the others programs did, affecting at lest 5 or 6 good journalists who now have to find another place to do their informative job.
There are all sorts of statements posted in Social Media regarding Heras Case, everybody rejects any manner of violence and repression against the Press, but the real danger is there, somehow society has been taught to reject the press, by some sectors of Mexico political system, and it has become one of the most dangerous countries for journalists, many have died.
