In order to ensure sustainable fishing activity regarding sardine, anchovy, mackerel and herring, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA), through the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the allowable catch volumes for theses small pelagic species by region in Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California for the 2025 season.
This measure was established based on the technical opinion of the Mexican Institute of Research in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture (IMIPAS), with the objective of strengthening the sustainability of aquatic resources
According to the Agreement published in the DOF (https://bit.ly/4nEtH8j), the allowable catch volumes on the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula are as follows:
● Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax): 325,661 tons
● Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax): 98,196 tons
● Thread herring (Opisthonema spp): 12,193 tons
● Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus): 19,712 tons

In the southern Gulf of California:
● Thread herring (Opisthonema spp): 82,648.7512 tons
In the Gulf of California:
● Monterrey sardine (Sardinops sagax): 178,740 tons
● Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus): 60,082 tons
● Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax): 228,610 tons
In the north-central Gulf of California:
● Thread herring (Opisthonema libertate): 245,418 tons
● Bigmouth anchovy (Cetengraulis mysticetus): 126,574 tons
These provisions apply to holders of valid commercial fishing permits and concessions dedicated to the harvesting of small pelagic species, as well as to captains, engine operators, fishers, and crew members of such vessels.
To avoid exceeding the authorized catch volumes, Conapesca will timely notify permit holders when operations need to be suspended upon reaching the established limits.
Those who fail to comply with or violate this Agreement will be subject to the sanctions established in the General Law of Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture and other applicable legal provisions. http://www.gob.mx/conapesca
