Searching Mothers: Ignored and Accused of Faking Pain, Want to be heard in Mexico City during the soccer global tournament

The searching mothers are women who are looking for their missing children in Mexico, because the country has been under a severe humanitarian crisis for the last 15 or 20 years, and the problem has worsened since 2018, with the dreadful figure of 132 thousand people that have “vanished” since then.

The way the 2018-2024 administration treated the searching mothers is indicative of its “humanism,” and now its successor, Sheinbaum, is adopting the same attitude and is not listeninmg to these women who lost their loved ones and never saw them again, but for Ms. Sheinbaum they might as well be financed by her enemies, so she points at them as part of a plot against her group so she even laughs at them.

Rosa Icela, a journalism graduate who works as Secretary of State, questioned why the searching mothers arrived to Mexico City in buses, automatically assuming that their “adversaries” financed them in order to be able to demonstrate during the soccer planetary tournament.

Following orders or telling her own opinion, she questions these women’s fight and showed she was relegating to second place the suffering of mothers having missing children, a total contradictory attitude since the discourse is humanitarian but actions ¿shows something very different.

The humanism that MORENA boasts of is called into question when cases like that of the women who lost a child overnight without a trace, and faced with the lack of answers from the government, decided to organize themselves to search for their loved ones, sparking the rejection of the 4T (Fourth Transformation).

Why does President Sheinbaum diminish the merits of social struggles like this one, which arise from civil society? Apparently, for MORENA, only the causes they lead are valid, and any independent attempt, outside their sphere, is labeled as an attack or plot by their enemies.

Claudia Sheinbaum, in her morning press conference, said that the mothers searching for their missing children who protested in Mexico City arrived in buses, as if to imply that they were “brought in,” just as her party does at government or campaign events, but there’s no problem there.

The resemblance of MORENA and the PRI are in a bigger mess than they themselves would admit. They impose a narrative that runs counter to the facts, confusing questions based on facts with responses like “that’s your opinion” or “I have other data.” Between the attempt to “erase” the mothers searching for their missing children from the daily narrative and the betrayal of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), the streets of Mexico City became a mega-forum for disseminating these two issues, coinciding with the media presence for the World Cup.
