The fact that Mexico is more dangerous for journalists than some countries at war, such a Ukraine, is an undeniable fact, with the killing of another Mexican journalist in Guanajuato, the pitiful figure adds up to 13 journalist murders in 2022, but the Federal Government doesn’t seem to care.
Ernesto Méndez, director of the newspaper ‘Tu voz’, was murdered in San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, when armed men violently entered a business belonging to the journalist’s family and shot him and other people who were with him.
Article 19, Mexican office, an international organization committed to defend the rights of journalists and human right advocates, informed that the crime occurred Tuesday night in the Cerro Prieto neighborhood, municipality of San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, when subjects broke into a bar belonging to the Méndez family and shot him multiple times leaving behind four more dead, two wounded before fleeing.
Méndez was the Director of ‘Tu voz’ media outlet and had already denounced that he had been threatened, so Article 19 demands the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) to attract this case and to considered that his informative work was the possible motive for the crime.
Article 19 pointed out that, with Ernesto Méndez murder, 13 journalists have been killed so far this year, at least nine of them were motivated by had some relation with the journalistic work of the victims.
Mexico has become one of the most dangerous countries for free journalism, along with countries are at war, there is even a Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists, operated by the Government which hasn´t really functioned, meanwhile attacks to the media keeps coming, in ine way or another.
