Amid a wave of rumors and misinformation about the cancellation of FIFA World Cup matches to be played in Mexico—arising from the capture and death of Organized Crime kingpin Nemesio Oseguera AKA “El Mencho” and the violent response from the CJNG—it was reported last weekend that everything remains on track for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, kicking off the tournament.

FIFA has full confidence in Mexico for the 2026 World Cup, assured the president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, who posted on social media that he has no doubt about the country’s ability to fulfill its commitment to host World Cup matches.

On the other hand, President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had a very positive phone conversation with Infantino and confirmed that preparations are moving forward for the World Cup matches to be played on Mexican soil, emphasizing that FIFA has full confidence in the country for this tournament.

But the World Cup is also at risk for other reasons: The problems in the Middle East, either you agree or not that armed conflict is an open confrontation where the USA and Israel attack Iran and the latter nation responds with bombings, which in turn cause Iran to attacks against Israel and a few other countries.

This wouldn´t be the first time a Major Sports competition suffers or is affected by international disagreements gone wrong, the Olympics were called off from the Berlin 1936 games to the 1948 Olympiad in London, a twelve-year hiatus due to WWII.

The World Cup was cancelled or shut down in part of last century 30s and 40s decades, from the Rome 1938 to the Brazil 1950 World Cup tournaments, another twelve-year pause brought up by WWII, now there are people all over the planet expecting the Iran conflict won´t affect soccer´s most important competition and one of the sports events with the biggest audience.

As Infantino reaffirms FIFA’s confidence in Mexico, tension grows all over the world as people watch events unfold expecting there will be a World Cup and that peace will find its way back to the core of a planet that has been wading through the cold waters of uncertainty.
