The Kumiai community of San Antonio Necua is part of Baja California cultural History and they have been living here for centuries, so it is very important to be aware of their heritage and all that they have brought to the State.

The Kumiai shared its rich culinary heritage, history, and traditions during the Kumiai Gastronomic Gathering, held at Wa Kumiai Tabita, the restaurant of traditional cook Tabita Domínguez Sandoval, as part of initiatives promoted by Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda.

The event took place in Valle de Guadalupe, where the Baja California Ministry of Tourism brought together tourism industry representatives and visitors to experience traditional Kumiai cuisine, learn about its native ingredients, and discover the ancestral knowledge that remains central to the identity of this Indigenous community.

Tourism Secretary Miguel Ángel Badiola Montaño said gatherings such as this encourage the consumption of locally produced foods, help preserve the state’s cultural heritage, and integrate Indigenous communities into the tourism value chain, generating economic opportunities for local families.

Guided by traditional cook Tabita Domínguez Sandoval, attendees explored the history and customs of the Kumiai people through a menu featuring emblematic regional ingredients, including acorn atole, traditional Kumiai broth, barbecued beef ribs, and a dessert inspired by wild sage.

The event also strengthened the promotion of San Antonio Necua as a cultural tourism destination, highlighting authentic experiences rooted in Indigenous traditions, the surrounding landscape, and the living heritage of Baja California.
