The Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) and Southwestern College (SWC) renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for an additional three-year period, aiming to expand academic opportunities and strengthen cooperation between both institutions to benefit the binational region.
UABC and SWC sign a Memorandum of Understanding for three more years, with new joint actions benefiting students in the CaliBaja region
The official signing ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 20, at UABC’s Tijuana Campus. This symbolic act marks a new chapter in an academic relationship that has promoted student mobility, faculty collaboration, and cross-border educational integration since its inception.
As part of the student exchange actions, both institutions aim to allow students to study at either school, enriching their education through diverse academic experiences. In terms of faculty collaboration, the agreement will promote joint research projects, professional development programs, and collaborative teaching activities between the universities’ academic staff.
One of the most significant developments is that, for the first time, both institutions will offer joint courses, expanding access to their educational offerings and solidifying regional academic integration. This marks a significant advancement in providing quality international education to the university community.
During the ceremony, UABC Rector Dr. Luis Enrique Palafox Maestre highlighted the importance of this alliance in strengthening public education and its impact on the social development of the CaliBaja region
He emphasized the fraternal relationship between both institutions and the need to maintain and strengthen binational ties for the benefit of students. He noted that the agreement will allow students from both sides of the border to study at either institution, with advantages such as reduced tuition.
He stressed that this collaboration is the result of commitments made during previous visits and expressed excitement about the joint activities between the students of both institutions. He reiterated UABC’s commitment to being an open space for academic exchange.
Dr. Silvia Cornejo, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Southwestern College, speaking on behalf of SWC President Dr. Mark Sánchez, emphasized her institution’s commitment to educating globally minded students capable of positively impacting the border region.
Following the signing, representatives from both institutions visited students from the Gastronomy program (UABC) and Culinary Arts program (SWC), who were putting into practice what they had learned in the first jointly offered course as part of the MOU. This course was held at UABC’s Faculty of Tourism and Marketing and symbolized the beginning of the agreement’s activities.
With this renewal, UABC and Southwestern College reaffirm their commitment to inclusive, innovative, and high-quality education, aimed at meeting the challenges and opportunities of a region that shares history, values, and common aspirations.
