Humanitarian aid collected by Baja Californians at several collection centers, which was set up by the Baja California DIF System (which means Family Integral Development, a Gov. organization) consisting of food supplies and personal hygiene items, also collected by educational centers, are on their way to the state of Guerrero to be distributed among the people who were damaged by Hurricane John a couple of months ago.

Hurricane John hit the Guerreo Coast, and impacted almost the whole State, last October. so, Ms. Mavis Olmeda García, DIF-BC Director, acknowledged and  thanked the solidarity and sympathy shown by Baja Californians who answered the call to support with donations ranging from canned goods to food hampers, which will soon be reaching those affected by this meteorological phenomenon.

Olmeda García recalled that, as of September 23, John, a Category 3 hurricane, affected 28 municipalities in Guerrero, mainly with heavy rains impacting 200 thousand people, in region that had been also ravaged a year before when Otis (another hurricane) destroyed the “Diamond Section” of Acapulco which was a very affluent district of the city.

Following instructions from María del Rocío García Pérez, head of the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF) and at the request of SEDIF Guerrero, the DIF 33 Network was activated to coordinate humanitarian support with state DIF systems, leading to the establishment of various collection centers and an appeal to the public, government agencies, and educational institutions to join this noble cause.

In total, 7.1 tons of aid were dispatched from the Baja California DIF System’s facilities on Mineros Street in Mexicali. A team from the General Operations Sub-Directorate classified, packaged, and loaded the supplies, which included non-perishable food, bottled water, pet food, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies, onto a truck.

“On behalf of all of us working at the Baja California DIF System, I want to wholeheartedly thank Baja Californians who once again showed their empathy and social commitment by responding to our call for support for the state of Guerrero, which has once again been affected by a hurricane. They are not alone; they have the support of all Mexicans in these difficult times,” affirmed Dr. Mavis Olmeda García.
