The murder of Minerva Pérez Castro, President of the National Chamber of Fishery and Aquaculture Industry (Canainpesca) in Ensenada, has impacted all of Baja California’s society, the woman was shot and killed a few blocks from her office, according to a press release issued by the State General Attorney (FGE in Spanish).
She had been denouncing extortion and protection money demands by organized crime against companies in the Fishery sector, as well as illegal fishing, which is a very important activity for the economy of Ensenada, she had been doing so for months.
A few hours before the murder, Pérez Castro had denounced illegal fishing in Ensenada, a crime which, besides evading tax payments, causes serious harm to the city’s economy due to the relevance of the fishery industry as a productive activity and job generator for the city.
Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda condemned the murder of the CANAINPESCA President and said that from the moment she learned about the crime, she told the State Secretary of Citizen Security, Leopoldo Tizoc Aguilar, to collaborate with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) in the investigations.
«I send my sincere condolences and my sympathies to the family of Minerva Pérez Castro. I am committed to working tirelessly so that what happened, does not go unpunished. To Ensenada residents, I want to make them feel certain that we work in order to achieve a state one of safety and peace,» she posted on “X” (Twitter).
Meanwhile, the State Attorney General, María Elena Andrade, instructed FGE personnel to thoroughly investigate the murder which occurred on Monday, July 8. Investigations began immediately with operational commanders, the heads of the Specialized Homicide Investigation Office, the State Investigation Agency, and the Forensic Science Institute.
The FGE is working on the crime scene and conducting investigations, collecting evidence to clarify these events, reaffirming the commitment to investigate this case to the fullest extent to ensure justice for the victims and that the perpetrators do not go unpunished.
