Based on the 30 thousand 613 hectares (around 75 thousand 600 acres) of wheat that were    sown during the 2024–2025 Fall–Winter agricultural cycle, one has to feel unease for the downfall of Agriculture in Mexicali Valley where the usual figure of wheat used to fluctuate around 100 thousand hectares, that is about 250 thousand acres.

What used to be the main crop in Mexicali Valley (along with cotton which has also suffered a downfall in sown surface) has become less than a third part of what it was 15 to 20 years ago, it´s a pity but Mexican Governments haven’t taken as seriously as they should, long before the so called 4T arrived to power.

Two weeks after the start of the wheat harvest the Baja California office of the federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported a 30% progress, according to reports from the District as of Friday, May 21, a total production of 56 thousand 128 tons of grain had been recorded (about 125 million pounds), with an average yield of 6.182 tons per hectare.

José Antonio Ramírez Gómez, the Federal Representative of the agency in the state, highlighted that harvesting activities have become widespread throughout the Mexicali Valley, as reported by Carlos Zambrano Reyes, head of Rural Development District 002, Río Colorado (DDR 002).

He explained that as of the previous Wednesday, harvesting was gaining momentum in the communities and ejidos belonging to CADERS (Rural Development Attention Centers) Benito Juárez, with 3 thousand 478 hectares harvested. This is 25 percent progress, considering that 14,101 hectares of the so-called «Golden Cereal» were planted in this cycle.
