Helping Baja California move toward sustainable mobility, protecting animals and environment, while preserving traditions, is a priority for Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, who delivered ten electric calandrias, which is (commonly) a horse-drawn carriage, traditionally used for transportation and now mostly found in tourist areas or historical city centers.

The calandrias delivered by Marina del Pilar ca transport for four people and the driver, were freely given to ten Ensenada permit holders, that is authorized drivers, enabling them to work aiming to help them figure an economic livelihood without losing the essence of their trade
Marina del Pilar also said that the calandrias symbolize a noble and traditional trade, which is part of Ensenada’s touristic offer and have shown a willingness to join a transportation model of a touristic attraction, with no animal cruelty whatsoever, promoting well-being and strengthening the city’s identity.
«We must continue pushing this project forward so that Ensenada can have electric carriages and tourists can continue enjoying this beautiful municipality, we are taking steps toward sustainable transformation, focusing on people, jointly seeking the best solutions, and this is a historic day because we will no longer see horses pulling carriages» said Marina del Pilar.

“I must thank you for your willingness to make this shift toward sustainable mobility, in conjunction with a reform that protects animals as sentient beings. With the delivery of these horse-drawn carriages, we continue to protect the history and culture of Ensenada through sustainable electric mobility. My gratitude to all the families who have made a living from this noble profession,” said the governor.
The Director of the Baja California Institute for Sustainable Mobility (IMOS), Jorge Gutiérrez Topete, emphasized that the transition to electric horse-drawn carriages completes the work begun with permit holders following the reform to the Baja California Mobility Law, along with the State Animal Protection Law, both promoted by Governor Marina del Pilar to prohibit animal traction in tourist transportation vehicles.
Finally, Jenny de la Cruz Velazco, representative of the horse-drawn carriage dealers, stated that the transition to electric horse-drawn carriages represents a modernization of the tourist service and the preservation of the tradition of this means of transportation for tourists, which allows them to discover Ensenada’s historical attractions.
