A young man identified as Dereck Eliad López Montes was found guilty of First-Degree Murder and he will spend the next 30 years in jail, for the killing of another youngster named Juan Martín “X” (Mexican Criminal Law doesn´t allow to publish certain surnames) according to a press release by the State Attorney General of Baja California (FGE in Spanish).
The murder, occurred on April 18, 2021, in Huertas de la Progreso Section of Mexicali, according to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) as Dereck and Juan Martín met each other through social media´s Facebook and agreed to meet in order for the latter to sell a car to Dereck.
According to the FGE’s statement, an emergency call to 9-1-1 reported a man who was lying on the pavement on the corner of Lázaro Cárdenas and Gómez Morín Boulevard in the aforementioned Section, son Mexicali PD officers arrived at the scene, from where they started seeking around, chased, found and arrested Dereck and an accomplice, both were accused of murder.
According to the FGE’s investigation, Dereck and another individual contacted the victim through social media, supposedly to buy a vehicle and meet at the mentioned location to close the deal
They threatened the victim with a firearm, stole his car, and then shot him in the head before fleeing. An operation by the Municipal Public Security Directorate apprehended them in flagrante delicto.

The Mexicali PD officers notified the agents of the Specialized Homicide Unit (FGE), initiating an investigation for aggravated homicide. The FGE reiterated its commitment to strengthening investigative work in crimes to achieve convictions against those responsible for committing illicit acts.
