It is urgent to conclude totoaba fish (totoaba macdonaldi) population study, which would be a great help and a boost for San Felipe fishermen who have been going through a severe crisis, said Congressman Jorge Eugenio Núñez Lozano (PBC),

He explained that, according to Rafael Pacciano Alamán, Environment Protection Secretary, the National Fishing Institute will give the results of a study about the population of this fish, which is an endemic species of the Sea of Cortez, before August ends.

“We are optimistic and I am sure that we are going to have positive results so the fishing activities can become a reality in the short term, in order to reactivate the fishery of this species and benefit San Felipe fishermen who have been going through a crisis”, said Núñez.

The relevance of being able to count on sport fishing of the totoaba, he explained, is that the Gulf of California is the only place in the world where this species is found, which would allow that the tourists who love fishing, to come to San Felipe to try to catch specimens of totoaba.

This would also foster and strengthen the touristic activities in San Felipe which would have a positive impact in the economy, provided that the fishing permits might be auctioned in more than 500 dollars.
