Constellation Brands construction suspended: The signals and Mexicali reality

Feb 28, 2017

ALFREDO AZCARATE VARELA EDITOR Constellation Brands (CB) comes to Mexicali with a huge investment, millions of dollars to open a brewery and export beer, a water expense that is not clear yet, job creation but with no details on salaries, number of employees and salary ranks, definitely the company (BC) gains more installing in Mexicali than anything that it would supposedly give to the community where CB will settle, not a fair deal. The arrival of this transnational has elicited demonstrations, rejection and protest, officials of the State Secretary of Economic Development  and entrepreneurial leaders defend CB while civil society groups attack it, the public hears both versions and gets even more mixed and confused. To receive an investment such as the one CB is bringing to Mexicali is relevant, but in fact the real beneficiaries are few, it is said that the company will come and foster development in the city, but no one sees clearly and the company responds in a shy manner to criticism, going to grant interviews in “comfortable” media which don’t represent any opinion leadership anymore, such as the white elephant named LA VOZ de la FRONTERA o whatever is left of LA CRONICA. Between the “tremendous arguments” the activists express, the political struggle of Rigo Campos and the statements of the entrepreneurial organization named COPARMEX regarding the damage and harm caused to Mexicali by suspending CB construction works, will make our city “lose face” as a foreign investment destination, the case is in the air: A transnational corporation comes to yield investment and economic growth that local entrepreneurs should, but they would rather build industrial warehouses and factories to rent them to foreign investors as CB. Conclusion: Mexican entrepreneurs would rather “go safe” building infrastructure to rent it to foreign investors than create and foster real national industry, Mexican companies which could trigger internal market and not “rental  agents” for foreign corporations who generate wealth here and take their profits to their own...
