Mexican photojournalist Juan Carlos Landa Rodríguez, who disappeared last November 10th, was found dead in a river in the state of Veracruz, near the city of Córdoba, where he worked as an independent photographer and reporter. This was announced on Sunday November 22nd, by the state prosecutor.

Speaking to the press, the head of the Attorney General (FGE), Luis Angel Bravo Contreras, said the lifeless body of the photojournalist was found on Friday November 14th, in the waters of the river that converge in the city of Omealca, on the outskirts of the city of Cordoba in Veracruz.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition of the photographer’s remains, the body could not be identified, until one of his relatives recognized a tattoo on his ankle, said the head of state prosecutors.

With Landa, there have been 17 journalists killed in Veracruz since 2010, during Gov. Javier Duarte’s administration; and therefore, this state has been spotlighted by national and international human rights organizations as one of the most dangerous for journalists in Mexico.

Bravo Contreras confirmed the killing of the 32 year-old photojournalist, but declined to give further details of the crime, saying only that there is an ongoing investigation to determine the motive of the homicide.

From January 1st, 2000 to January 31st 2015, more than a hundred journalists have been killed in 20 different states throughout Mexico.
