Mexican American California student dies in Paris attacks

On Friday November 13th, a Mexican American a student of the California State University in Long Beach, died during the attacks in Paris, which left 129 dead and 352 wounded, 99 of them seriously.

The victim, Nohemi Gonzalez, age 23, was studying graphic design for one semester in Paris  under a student exchange program.

Jane Close, president of the University, said in a press conference that she was fatally injured in a restaurant where she was having dinner with other students.

The university expressed their condolescens for the death of the young girl, who was a resident of the community of El Monte, 34 kilometers west of downtown Los Angeles.

“CSU is held in solidarity with our nearly 80 French students exchange program as they face this tragedy,” Close said in a statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) confirmed the death of two Mexican women, one with Mexican and Spanish nationalities and the other a Mexican American, as a result of the terrorist attacks perpetrated in Paris on Friday November 13th.

The Mexican American victim’s name is Nohemi González, age 23, she was a student of California State University in Long Beach.

Through an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) said that it have made contact with the families of both victims and expressed the deepest condolences to them in behalf of the Government of Mexico.

Moreover, the Ministry has offered assistance in the process of autopsy and transfer of remains to their respective places of origin.

In addition, it was reported that another Mexican compatriot who was injured as a result of the attacks in Paris, was operated successfully on Saturday November 14th, in a hospital in the French capital, and continues recovering. This Mexican national also has Austrian passport.

SRE maintains its protocols providing assistance and consular protection for Mexican citizens in contingency cases such as this.

Staff of the Mexican Embassy in Paris continues in contact with French authorities to identify possible situations with other Mexican citizens during the Paris attacks.
